WHERE I LIVE

My apartment in the Pacific Beach community of San Diego is small, but very nice, and not far from the ocean.  It meets my needs, and I feel happy and free here.

My Apartment:  (1) there are four apartments in the building; mine is upstairs on the right; (2) birds of paradise at the front door of the building; (3) living room, (4) office area, (5) as seen from my patio, a colorful sunset over the ocean.  Click these thumbnails to see full-size pictures (use your "back" button to return).

Raleigh, North Carolina (where I was born and later lived for a year with my maternal grandfather)

Washington, DC (where I was raised)

Trenton, New Jersey (for a childhood year with my paternal grandmother)

Princeton, New Jersey (where I attended first year of college)

Baltimore, Maryland (during my time at the Peabody Conservatory)

Ruston, Louisiana (where I taught at Louisiana Tech University)

Urbana, Illinois (where I was a graduate student and then a faculty member at the University of Illinois)

Rochester, New York (where I taught at the Eastman School of Music)

Fairfax, Virginia (where I taught at George Mason University)

Tempe, Arizona (where I spent a year in retirement)

San Diego, California (since 2000)

Aruba (port days in Oranjestad with, on one occasion, a bus tour of the entire island)

Barbados (port days in Bridgetown)

Belgium (a weeklong in Brussels and several port days in Zeebruge with daytrips to Bruges)

Canada (weeklongs in Toronto, Montreal, and on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls)

Canary Islands, Spain (port days in Santa Cruz de Tenerife; in Arrecife, Lanzarote; and in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria)

Chile (a weeklong in Valparaiso/Santiago and port days in Tierra del Fuego, Punta Arenas, and Puerto Montt)

China (port days in Shanghai and Hong Kong [including a ferry and bus trip to visit the Giant Buddha on Lantao Island])

Costa Rica (port days in Puntarenas)

Croatia (a port day in Dubrovnik)

Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles (port days in Willemstad)

Dubai (a four-day stay after disembarkation from the final voyage of the QE2 and, on another occasion, an ordinary port day)

Egypt (overnight port stays in Alexandria and another port day in Alexandria with a sidetrip to Cairo; two transits of the Suez Canal with, on one occasion, a day in Port Said))

England, United Kingdom (a few weeklongs in London and one weeklong in Aldeburgh with shorter visits to Bath, Canterbury, and Oxford; and of course, in and out of the port of Southampton several times)

France (several long visits in Paris [including two six-week summers] and shorter stays in Antibes, Cannes, Chartres, the Mont Saint-Michel, Nice, and San Raphael; also port days in Cannes and Cherbourg)

Germany (some stopovers in Frankfort and a longer stay for my daughter's first wedding in the Kaiserslautern area)
